Rays of Light Academy: Building a Future Close to Home

In Oldanyati, a rural Maasai community in Kajiado County, a school is beginning to rise from the earth. Rays of Light Academy is a community-led response to a simple but urgent truth: a young child’s opportunity to learn should not depend on walking an impossible distance.

A school close enough to reach

Families in the area report that the nearest early-childhood centre can be as far as 20 kilometers away. For children under six, that distance is more than an inconvenience—it can close the door to education before learning has even begun. Rays of Light Academy is planned to bring early learning within approximately three kilometers for nearby children.

Learning and nourishment

Safe and inclusive

Water, sanitation and child-friendly facilities built into the plan.

Children are already eager to learn. The Academy will give that curiosity a safe, permanent home.

More than classrooms

The vision extends beyond two classrooms. The planned campus includes a multi-purpose school hall, dining hall and kitchen, administrative space, sanitation facilities and a water connection. Together, these spaces are designed to support early learning, daily nourishment, health, parent engagement and community gatherings.

Accessible education is especially important for girls, who face a greater risk of leaving school early when distance, safety and economic pressure stand in the way. Boys also miss learning when family work and livestock responsibilities take priority. A nearby school gives every family a more realistic choice.

Built with the community

This is not a school being imposed on Oldanyati. Community members have contributed labor, local leaders help oversee construction and families are organizing around the school’s long-term future. That local ownership matters: it builds accountability now and creates the relationships that will sustain the Academy after its doors open.

The first major groundwork has included site preparation, excavation, foundation work, sanitation preparation and the difficult task of replacing unsuitable surface soil with load-bearing material. Each completed stage makes the next one possible: the floor, the walls, the beams, the roof, the doors and windows, and the finishing work that will turn a construction site into a welcoming school.

A foundation is more than stone and concrete. It is a promise that children will have a place to learn, belong and imagine what comes next.

Help the light grow

Rays of Light Academy represents the kind of progress that lasts: local vision, community participation and practical partnership coming together around children. With every construction milestone, Oldanyati moves closer to a school where distance no longer decides who gets to begin learning.
